You are collected from your Dubai hotel in the morning and head south along the coast road towards Abu Dhabi, with time built in for stops on the way rather than a straight run through. The drive itself is part of the day, with the port area and the shifting skyline giving your guide plenty to talk about before the capital comes into view. The Grand Mosque is the centrepiece and the longest stop, with time to walk the courtyards and the prayer hall under its chandeliers and marble inlay. From there the route takes in the presidential palace and the landmark palace hotel, the towers of the business district, a run along the corniche and out towards the islands, and a look at the heritage village for a sense of pearling-era life before the oil years. A dates or carpet market stop usually rounds things off. The tour runs privately, so the group is yours alone and the pace can bend a little towards what interests you most. Transfers are included both ways in an air-conditioned vehicle. Dress modestly for the mosque: women need arms and ankles covered and an opaque headscarf, men need shoulders and knees covered. Bring photo ID, a camera and shoes you can walk in. It suits first-time visitors, couples and families, though the long hours in the car are worth weighing up if you are travelling with very young children.
